PELVIC ULTRASOUND SCANNING
A pelvic ultrasound can give a great depth of information about your pelvic anatomy and help us pick up many abnormalities. We can explain our scan findings on the screen as we perform the procedure.
Some conditions in which it can help us with, are heavy, painful periods, looking for causes of pelvic pain such as ovarian cysts , looking for masses in the pelvis which may cause pressure symptoms such as fibroids and it can also be useful in sub-fertility examination.
Gynaecologists often perform this via a trans-vaginal route, an “internal scan”. This only takes a few minutes and is not usually uncomfortable but simply a sensation of pressure.
We appreciate though that an internal scan might not be for everyone and therefore if you have not been sexually active, have difficulties with intercourse or for young girls we would offer a “tummy” abdominal scan.
